Small Home Changes Can Improve Your Family's Health

My husband and I both suffer from allergies and asthma and, unfortunately, two of our children inherited our health problems. Living with both can be a struggle, but we take every step we can to keep our family healthy. One spring, when our seasonal allergies were especially bad, we decided to finally have our carpeting replaced with natural tile flooring and that was a great decision. Even though it seemed like we vacuumed constantly, I guess our carpets harbored more dust and mites than we ever expected! Since then, we have invested in other upgrades to improve our family's health, including antimicrobial kitchen counter tops. I enjoy helping others, so I decided to start a blog to share what we have learned about home upgrades and renovations. I plan to post on a variety of topics, so there will be something of interest to everyone!

Four Ideas To Help You With The Construction Of Docks And Seawalls On Your Lakefront Property

If you have a home on lakefront property, you may want to make some improvements on it, which can include having things like docks and seawalls built. This can give you a lot more use out of the home you have invested in. Also, things like seawalls can help to protect your home and property from high water levels and other problems that you may have with a home on a lake. Here are four ideas to help you get the most out of your marine construction projects for your lake house:

1. Building An Attractive And Functional Seawall

There are many types of seawalls that you can have built, which do not always have to be ugly concrete walls. You can have them made with decorative retaining wall systems or treated lumber. This can also be practical when raising the grading height of your property, which can give you a flat space for your garden, lawn or other landscaping features that you want to have for your home on the lake.

2. The Benefits Of A Fixed Dock

Fixed docks are set on piers and will not move with the water levels. This means that you may not be able to use them when the water level is lower during the winter months. They do have benefits, though, such as allowing you to build larger structures that can carry bigger loads. This can be a boathouse with a dock on top, or other structures such as a dock with two levels for different uses that you may have, such as a sitting area on your dock.

3. Combining Fixed And Floating Dock Features

If you want to have the best of both types of docks, you can combine your fixed dock with a floating system that will float with the water level. If you use your dock all year, and want to be able to use it when the water levels are lower, this is an ideal system to have built for your home. You can have them built as connected structures, or you can have a marine construction service such as Abbott's Construction Services Inc. build you two separate docks.

4. The Best Decking Materials To Use For Decks In A Marine Environment

When you are having a dock built, you may want to choose different decking materials that what you use for the decks for your home. This is because this decking is in a marine environment, and there are materials that will perform better. You may want to look at vinyl decking and composite decking materials, which are durable and will not decay like conventional wood decking materials.

If you are going to have a seawall and dock built for your home, these are some things you may want to consider. You can contact a marine construction contractor to get more advice on what will be right for your particular property.
