Small Home Changes Can Improve Your Family's Health

My husband and I both suffer from allergies and asthma and, unfortunately, two of our children inherited our health problems. Living with both can be a struggle, but we take every step we can to keep our family healthy. One spring, when our seasonal allergies were especially bad, we decided to finally have our carpeting replaced with natural tile flooring and that was a great decision. Even though it seemed like we vacuumed constantly, I guess our carpets harbored more dust and mites than we ever expected! Since then, we have invested in other upgrades to improve our family's health, including antimicrobial kitchen counter tops. I enjoy helping others, so I decided to start a blog to share what we have learned about home upgrades and renovations. I plan to post on a variety of topics, so there will be something of interest to everyone!

Natural Stone Options For Kitchen Countertops

When you decide to remodel your kitchen, one of the most important decisions you can make is regarding your kitchen countertops. The material and aesthetic you choose for your kitchen countertop design can set the tone for your entire kitchen design and will be the basis upon which you choose other materials and paint colors. Natural stones are some of the most durable and high-quality kitchen countertop materials available. So, get to know some of the natural stone countertop options and the benefits they can provide you. Once you know your options, you can get started on your kitchen remodel and have your new kitchen as soon as possible.

Granite is one of the most popular natural stone countertop choices available. This stone adds an element of sophistication and elegance to your kitchen design that is unmatched by virtually any other countertop material option.

Granite comes in a variety of shades and hues, all naturally occurring. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, granite is a particularly hard stone. This means that you will not have to worry about scratches or damage from normal wear and use. Additionally, granite that is properly sealed is highly moisture-resistant and will not absorb liquids or stain when spilled on.

However, if your granite countertops are not well-sealed, they are porous and will absorb liquids, making them susceptible to stains. So, if you do decide on granite, be sure your contractor properly seals them when performing the installation.

Soapstone is another natural stone countertop option that can enhance your kitchen remodeling design. This stone is softer than granite but is still quite tough and durable. Unlike unsealed granite, soapstone is naturally nonporous, meaning it will not absorb water the same way that granite could.

Soapstone does not have the color versatility that granite does. But, if you like dark stone or nearly black countertops, then soapstone may be the best natural stone option for you.

As an added bonus, soapstone is one of the most heat-resistant materials used for kitchen countertops. This means that the heat of your stove will not damage or otherwise affect your countertops.

Because soapstone is a soft stone, this means that it is more susceptible to nicks scratches, and the wearing down of edges over time. So, you will need to be more careful if you choose soapstone than if you use granite or other harder stones.

As you can see, natural stone provides you with beautiful and versatile kitchen countertop options. So, keep these in mind as you make your final countertop material decision. Visit for more information.
