Small Home Changes Can Improve Your Family's Health

My husband and I both suffer from allergies and asthma and, unfortunately, two of our children inherited our health problems. Living with both can be a struggle, but we take every step we can to keep our family healthy. One spring, when our seasonal allergies were especially bad, we decided to finally have our carpeting replaced with natural tile flooring and that was a great decision. Even though it seemed like we vacuumed constantly, I guess our carpets harbored more dust and mites than we ever expected! Since then, we have invested in other upgrades to improve our family's health, including antimicrobial kitchen counter tops. I enjoy helping others, so I decided to start a blog to share what we have learned about home upgrades and renovations. I plan to post on a variety of topics, so there will be something of interest to everyone!

Building A Country Home? Consider These Options To Be Independent

Building a home in the country away from the hustle and congestion of the city can be very enjoyable, and there are some ways you can make your home independent from the needs of city properties. If you don't think you want to depend on the city for all of your utilities, you'll want to consider these different choices when building a home.

Water Well

With your own well, you don't have to worry about water contamination because you use your own softening system and filters. You also don't have to worry about the water getting shut off unexpectedly, having to pay monthly based on the amount that you need to use, or dealing with city-wide water problems. Instead, you get pure drinking water and water for showering and other things whenever you need it. The drilling company for the well can give you an estimate.

Propane Tank

If you worry that you will have high gas bills going through a utility company and you don't want to have your gas controlled by someone else, a propane tank is ideal. If you try to keep your thermostat low, you use a natural wood burning fireplace, and you don't like the idea that a gas line shutoff or another problem could limit your ability to get heat, propane is one of the best ways for you to heat your home and your water. Many people only need their propane tank filled once a year.

Solar Geothermal Heat Pump

If you want to conserve even more energy, a solar geothermal heat pump is great. This appliance will heat the house when the weather is moderate, cool the house in the summer, and can heat your water with solar power. It's more efficient than a furnace or an air conditioner, and it makes the home very efficient. This unit will also greatly reduce the amount of propane you use.

You can talk with the building contractor (such as one from Advanced Drilling) about having these things utilized during construction, and to find out what other changes you can make to the basic home plan to make your home less dependent on local providers. This is ideal if there is a natural disaster or if something happens and you can't depend on your utility companies to provide what you need. If you're going to be building a house and you want to be an independent property, these options are great to start with.
