Small Home Changes Can Improve Your Family's Health

My husband and I both suffer from allergies and asthma and, unfortunately, two of our children inherited our health problems. Living with both can be a struggle, but we take every step we can to keep our family healthy. One spring, when our seasonal allergies were especially bad, we decided to finally have our carpeting replaced with natural tile flooring and that was a great decision. Even though it seemed like we vacuumed constantly, I guess our carpets harbored more dust and mites than we ever expected! Since then, we have invested in other upgrades to improve our family's health, including antimicrobial kitchen counter tops. I enjoy helping others, so I decided to start a blog to share what we have learned about home upgrades and renovations. I plan to post on a variety of topics, so there will be something of interest to everyone!

How To Get Your Cooling Expenses Under Control

When the weather is scorching hot it's undeniable that maintaining a cool indoor temperature is absolutely essential. You want to be able to bask in the luxurious, cold air that blasts from your vents and makes indoor living much more tolerable. However, along with the joys of air conditioning comes the costs. If your cooling expenses are starting to go through the roof you might think that you're going to have to pull the plug on your unit in order to preserve your wallet. However, you don't have to be left to an ultimatum. Use this information to learn more about a couple of things you can do to start getting your cooling costs under control as soon as possible:

Your Insulation Might Be Out-Of-Date

The first place you should look when you're trying to reign in your cooling expenses is likely one that you hadn't considered:  Your insulation. Unbeknownst to you, there could be more efficient ways to insulate your house so that you're able to enjoy a cool domain without breaking the bank.

Your insulation is put into place for a number of reasons. It helps to keep critters out that may find themselves within your walls, cuts down on the amount of outdoor noise that is able to disturb you and makes it possible for you to keep the climate-controlled air within the walls of your house. If the insulation is outdated or has deteriorated in certain spots, this provides a doorway for air to seep outside. As this occurs your cooling unit has to compensate by pumping out more air to make up the difference. This requires greater amounts of power and causes your energy expenses to rise.

If this scenario applies to you, it might be a good idea to get liquid insulation. It provides more coverage for those areas that traditional insulation just can't reach.

Ceiling Fans Can Make A Difference

Ceiling fans are also a great way to increase the efficiency of your cooling system. They circulate the air with more momentum, giving you the ability to put your air conditioning unit on a higher setting that doesn't require as much power without sacrificing the coolness of the air within your home.

There are things you can do to get your cooling bill under control. When you find that keeping a comfortable indoor temperature is hurting your pocket, remember these tips so you can reign in the costs as soon as possible.
