Small Home Changes Can Improve Your Family's Health

My husband and I both suffer from allergies and asthma and, unfortunately, two of our children inherited our health problems. Living with both can be a struggle, but we take every step we can to keep our family healthy. One spring, when our seasonal allergies were especially bad, we decided to finally have our carpeting replaced with natural tile flooring and that was a great decision. Even though it seemed like we vacuumed constantly, I guess our carpets harbored more dust and mites than we ever expected! Since then, we have invested in other upgrades to improve our family's health, including antimicrobial kitchen counter tops. I enjoy helping others, so I decided to start a blog to share what we have learned about home upgrades and renovations. I plan to post on a variety of topics, so there will be something of interest to everyone!

Tips For Preventing Commercial Flood Damage

With hurricanes and other weather events increasing in intensity, it's become more important for business owners to be prepared in the event of any flooding. While many business owners just assume that insurance will cover damages, if you don't have any flood insurance, it won't necessarily do that. Luckily, you can minimize your risk of flood damage with some careful preparation. Here are some tips to help you reduce your need for commercial flood restoration services.

Go Digital

Your company's records are one of the most at-risk objects in your office when there's a flood. Paper records can be absolutely destroyed by flooding. One of the best ways to combat this risk is to go digital with your records. Even if it's just digital backups and you keep the paper copies for your day-to-day tasks, you'll still preserve your company records in the event of a flood.

Some of the things you'll want to keep digital backups of include the deeds to your property, copies of your insurance policies, your inventory records, sales records, employee documentation, and any other important records.

Move Things

Whenever possible, move items, furniture, and objects out of the path of the water. If your building has multiple stories, put as much as you can on the upper floors to protect it. When you have more than one property, it can even be advantageous to actually move things to a property that's on higher ground. Clearly, you will need to have ample notice of the incoming weather event to take advantage of this, but the more proactive you are, the better.

Use Sandbags

As a final layer of protection, you should place sandbags along the vulnerable areas of your building. The vulnerable areas include all of the doors, including your loading bay doors. If you have never created sandbags, it's not as difficult as you might think. Fill bags with sand, then fold the top over. Put the bags in place with the folded top down. Don't put more than three layers of bags in place unless you build a pyramid because you'll need to be able to account for the weight and pressure to keep them in place against the water.

For more tips, contact a local commercial flood restoration company and look at websites like http://www.apex411.com. They can give you more recommendations to protect your building and its contents. The better prepared you are, the better it will be for your company.
